EU RoHS certification

Date:2022-12-16

What is RoHS testing?

RoHS certification is a mandatory standard established by EU legislation, and its full name is the "Restriction of Hazardous Substances" directive. This standard has been officially implemented since July 1, 2006, mainly used to standardize the material and process standards of electronic and electrical products, making them more conducive to human health and environmental protection.
RoHS certification, also known as the European Environmental Directive, stipulates that all electronic and electrical products exported to Europe must not contain the following six toxic and harmful substances: lead Pb, mercury Hg, cadmium Cd, hexavalent chromium Cr (VI), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). And it is emphasized that the cadmium content cannot exceed 0.01%.

RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) is a mandatory standard established by EU legislation. Its full name is the "Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electronic and Electrical Equipment". On July 21, 2011, RoHS 2.0, the revised version of the RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU), replaced the old RoHS Directive (2002/95/EC). EU member states must update RoHS 2.0 to local laws by January 2, 2013. The biggest highlight of RoHS 2.0 is that it has become a directive for CE marking, so electronic and electrical products can only be affixed with CE marking when they comply with the LVD (safety), EMC (electromagnetic compatibility), EuP (energy efficiency), and RoHS (restriction of harmful substances) directives.

RoHS 2.0 standard
The Official Journal of the European Union (OJ) has released the revised RoHS 2.0 directive (EU) 2015/863, and the dust has finally settled on the update of EU RoHS 2.0. The original six controlled substances, lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr VI), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), have been changed to ten controlled substances, with the addition of di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), toluene butyl phthalate (BBP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) (referred to as 4P), which were previously listed in RoHS 2.0. Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCCD), which has been prioritized as an evaluated substance, has not been officially included in the list of restricted substances. The limit of control for these ten controlled substances is 0.1% and 0.01% respectively.
After the issuance of this revised directive, EU member states are required to translate it into their own regulations and implement it by December 31, 2016. Starting from July 22, 2019, all electronic and electrical products exported to Europe (excluding medical and monitoring equipment) must meet this restriction requirement; Starting from July 22, 2021, medical equipment (including extracorporeal medical equipment) and monitoring equipment (including industrial monitoring equipment) will also be included in this control scope. In addition, toy products that are already subject to benzene control under Article 51 of Annex XVII of REACH will not be subject to the control of DEHP, BBP, and DBP under this directive.

RoHS testing product range
The RoHS directive covers electronic and electrical products listed in the catalog below AC1000V and DC1500:
1. Large household appliances: refrigerators, washing machines, microwaves, air conditioners, etc;
2. Small household appliances: vacuum cleaners, electric irons, hair dryers, ovens, clocks, etc;
3. IT and communication equipment: computers, fax machines, telephones, mobile phones, etc;
4. Civilian devices: radios, televisions, video recorders, musical instruments, etc;
5. Lighting fixtures: fluorescent lamps and lighting control devices other than household lighting;
6. Electric tools: electric drill, lathe, welding, spray, etc. (except for large industrial tools to be installed);
7. Toys/entertainment, sports equipment: electric vehicles, video game consoles;
8. Medical devices: radiation therapy equipment, electrocardiogram testing equipment, analytical instruments, etc;
9. Monitoring/control equipment: smoke detectors, incubators, factory monitoring and control machines, etc;
10. Vending machines;
Among them, the RoHS directive does not currently apply to Articles 8 and 9. The above are all within the scope of Zhonghan Testing's business.

RoHS certification report/certificate processing procedure
1. Confirm issues such as testing items, costs, and cycles;
2. Fill out the testing application form (the testing application form is provided by Zhonghan, and an electronic version can be provided after filling out the testing application form);
3. Arrange samples (send the samples that need to be tested by express delivery);
4. After receiving the samples, arrange for testing (to be completed by the testing and reporting departments of Zhonghan Testing Laboratory);
5. Draft report confirmation (a draft report will be issued for customer confirmation after the completion of the testing report);
6. Issue a formal report (notify customer service to issue a formal report after the customer confirms that the information is correct);
7. Send RoHS report (formal report has both written and electronic versions).
